If your team has the roster room and cap space to make a free-agent acquisition a week into free agency, I'm wondering which guys who are still out there you'd actually want.
People have been making the Patrick Kane-to-Buffalo connection for a few months now and I guess he helps fill in some of that missing offense from losing Alex Tuch, but the AAV and certainly the term would have to make sense. Likewise, it's easy to imagine scorers like Anthony Mantha and Vladimir Tarasenko — the only two remaining UFAs who cleared 20 goals last season — are gonna find landing spots. But the rest of these guys? They aren't really much for "getting points."
There are, though, players you might think about taking a chance on, like Eeli Tolvanen or Marcus Johansson, but they're certainly not going to be the missing piece someone's been looking for over the last week. If they were, they'd be signed by now, because it's not like competition for their services feels especially fierce. Obviously a number of teams are keeping their cap space free for the couple dozen RFAs unsigned (27 in all, but some of them are not NHL players, and even more are not going to get a lot of money), but we're at the point where the number of contracts that are gonna get you off the couch is next to zero.
What is a takesman such as myself to do?
Anyway, you're here for the takes. So let's get to 'em:
